Why Your Baby Wakes Up Early: Reasons and How to Fix It – Out For The Count

Writer: Stephanie DonaldsonStephanie Donaldson

Early morning wake-ups - especially if they happen consistently before 6AM, are a common struggle for many of the families that I work with. But it's crucial to understand that these disruptions can often stem from a variety of factors such as; sleep associations, developmental milestones or inconsistent sleep routines.

Let’s dive into why your little one might be waking up too early and more importantly, how you can fix it.

Reasons for Early Morning Wake-Ups

  1. Overtiredness from Poor Nap Schedules

When babies get too little sleep during the day, they can become overtired, which may cause them to wake up earlier than usual. Overtired babies often struggle with staying asleep for long stretches at night and may wake up early as a result of this. This is particularly common for babies who perhaps miss naps or don't nap long enough. This cycle of overtiredness can also lead to a decrease in the quality of sleep, causing them to wake up earlier than expected.

Solution: Ensure that your baby's nap schedule is aligned with their natural sleep needs. For babies aged 4-6 months aim for 2-3 naps per day and for older babies, 1-2 naps might be sufficient. Keep a close eye on wake windows - how long your baby stays awake between naps and make sure they're not staying up too long.

  2. Hunger

If your baby is waking up early, it could simply be that they're hungry. Babies often need night-time feedings or may wake up earlier in the morning if they haven't had enough food before bed. This is common for babies under 6 months old, although older babies can also experience hunger-related early wake-ups if they are going through a growth spurt.

Solution: Make sure that your baby is well-fed before bedtime. If your baby is younger than 6 months, consider a dream feed (feeding while they're still asleep), this will help them stay fuller for longer. For babies over 6 months, check that their daytime feedings are adequate and they're eating enough during the day to carry them through the night.

  3. Inconsistent Bedtime Routine

A lack of consistency in bedtime routines can lead to early morning wake-ups. Babies thrive on routine and when their bedtime routine varies from night to night, it can disrupt their sleep cycle, leading to earlier than expected wake-ups. A consistent bedtime routine signals to your little one that it is time to wind down and sleep, helping them fall into a deeper and longer sleep.

Solution: Establish a consistent bedtime routine that includes calming activities, such as a warm bath, gentle rocking, reading a short story or lullabies. Stick to the same routine each night and make sure the environment is conductive to sleep i.e. dim lighting, a quiet room and comfortable temperature.

  4. Environmental Factors

The environment in which your baby sleeps can often play a significant role in early wake-ups. Noise, light and temperature all influence sleep quality. For example, if your baby's room is too bright in the morning, they may wake up as soon as daylight begins to seep in. Similarly if the room is too hot or too cold, your baby might wake up feeling uncomfortable.

Solution: Make sure your baby's room is dark enough by using blackout curtains or blinds. The room should also be at a comfortable temperature and free from excessive noise. A white noise machine can help drown out disruptive sounds.

  1. Developmental Milestones

Babies go through several developmental milestones during their first year such as; rolling over, crawling and teething. These milestones can disrupt their sleep and lead to early wake-ups.

Solution: Be patient with your baby during these developmental stages. Offer comfort and reassurance if they wake up early, but avoid getting into the habit of immediately picking them up or feeding them when they wake up, especially if they aren't crying. Over time, they'll adjust to these changes and their sleep will improve.

  1. Body Clocks / The Circadian Rhythm

One of the more common reasons babies wake up early, is their body's natural circadian rhythm. If your baby's sleep routine isn't quite synced with natural light patterns, they may wake up with the first rays of light. Babies who wake up with the sun, may have trouble going back to sleep, especially if they're not yet used to a consistent sleep-wake cycle.

Solution: Avoid letting your baby get too much light exposure first thing in the morning. Keep the room dark until it's time to get up. If your baby is waking up too early, try pushing their bedtime a little later to encourage a later morning wake-up time.

How to Fix Early Morning Wake-Ups

  1. Adjust Bedtime (Not Too Late, Not Too Early)

One of the most common fixes to early morning wake-ups is adjusting your baby's bedtime. It may seem counterintuitive, but putting your baby to bed too late can lead to overtiredness, which often results in earlier wake-ups. However, putting them to bed too early can cause them to wake up in the early hours of the morning. Find that sweet spot for bedtime, where your baby isn't overtired but also isn't too rested.

Tip: Aim for a bedtime that works with your baby's natural sleep rhythms. Typically, babies 6-12 months old do well with a bedtime between 7-9pm.

  2. Create a Sleep-Inducing Environment

Ensuring that your baby's room is dark, cool and quiet is crucial. Blackout curtains or blinds and a white noise machine can be incredibly helpful tools in promoting longer stretches of sleep. Also, consider using a sleeping bag or swaddle instead of using loose blankets, as they provide comfort and warmth ensuring safety.

  1. Set Consistent Wake-Up Times

To prevent early wake-ups, try setting a consistent wake-up time each morning, even on weekends. Your baby's body will gradually become conditioned to this rhythm and you'll be helping them develop a stronger circadian rhythm.

Tip: Keep the room dim when you first get your baby out of bed and delay any stimulating activities until later. This helps keep them in 'sleep mode'.

  1. Avoid Picking Up Immediately

When your baby wakes up early, it’s tempting to rush in and scoop them up. However, this can reinforce the habit of waking up early. Instead, wait a few minutes to see if your baby settles back to sleep on their own. If they continue to cry or fuss, check to make sure they’re not in discomfort (hunger, teething, or a dirty nappy) before offering comfort.

  1. Be Patient and Consistent

Fixing early morning wake-ups won’t happen overnight. It takes time for babies to adjust to a new sleep routine or environment. Be patient, stick to the plan, and give your baby’s body time to adapt.

Final Thoughts

Early morning wake-ups can be frustrating, but with the right strategies, you can help your baby (and yourself) get more rest. By understanding the root causes of early wake-ups and making simple adjustments to your baby’s sleep routine, environment, and feeding schedule, you can improve your baby’s sleep quality and foster longer, more restful nights.
